In 2024, New Zealand introduced new regulations to ensure better safety and responsible use. New NZ vape laws include limits on nicotine strength, improved vape device child safety mechanisms, and restrictions on eLiquid flavour names. Here’s a breakdown of these requirements and their effective dates:

 

1. Nicotine Strength Limits

From 21st March 2024, disposable prefilled vapes cannot exceed 20 mg/mL nicotine concentration. Other eLiquids and prefilled vape pods, designed for use in reusable devices, can contain a maximum nicotine concentration of 28.5mg/mL.

Customers who were previously using higher nicotine concentrations may need to adjust to these limits. This adjustment could involve:

• Switching products: Some users might need to find new products that match their nicotine preferences within the legal limit.
• Gradual reduction: For those using vaping as a smoking cessation tool, the nicotine cap encourages a gradual reduction in nicotine intake, which can be beneficial for long-term quitting efforts.
  
  

2. Restrictions on Flavour Names

From 21^st March 2024, as part of new NZ Vape laws, all eLiquid names must include up to two basic flavour names from the approved list provided by the Ministry of Health.

3. Child Safety Mechanism on Vape Devices

Starting 1^st October 2024, all vape devices that are sold in New Zealand must have a child safety mechanism and removable battery. The child safety mechanism is designed to prevent accidental use by children, ensuring greater safety.

• Removable battery: All vaping devices must have a removable battery that can be removed and replaced without damaging the battery or device using no more than a screwdriver.
  
  
• Child safety mechanism: The safety feature must require either 2 simultaneous actions or 5 sequential actions to deactivate. Additionally, the vape device will automatically shut off after 10 minutes of inactivity.
